Billybob and Jack

In the April 2011 school holidays we went sailing in the Marlborough Sounds. Tamati Tui from Ruma Tui came with us too. We drove to Picton and sailed out of Waikawa Bay Marina to Endeavour Inlet. We stayed at the Endeavour Resort which had a really cool hammock. There were Wekas outside our cabin everyday. Every night we played Uno. We walked through the bush to Furneaux Lodge. There were lots of Tui’s and other native birds following us through the bush. We saw lots of jellyfish from the jetty at Furneaux Lodge and when we were sailing. On the Tuesday we sailed to Resolution Bay where my Dad went for holidays when he was little. We fed the fish from the jetty. On Wednesday we sailed to Ship Cove. This is where Captain Cook landed 7 times. It is really beautiful. There is a big monument and some old cannons. We went fishing and caught blue cod for dinner. On Thursday we sailed back to Waikawa Bay. We went to the EcoWorld aquarium in Picton where they had lots of big fish, sting rays, seahorses, packhorse crayfish, shark egg cases, an octopus, turtles, and a dead giant squid. They also had geckos and tuataras and red-crowned kakariki parrots. The next day we went to Blenheim and camped on the boat at the Omaka Classic Fighters Airshow. We saw lots of old World War 1 planes and Billybob even got to sit in the ejection seat of an Air Force plane. They also had old tanks & fire engines and a vintage car display. On the way home we stopped to look at the seals at Kaikoura. Thanks for coming on holiday with us Billybob. We had lots of fun together.

Kayaking

I traveled in a car with Mr Clarkson to kayaking on Wednesday. When it was my turn I got dressed into the wet suit that Catherine’s mum gave me to wear. We had to get safe helmets on and safe life jackets on before we got into the boats. I got into the kayak and I got pushed in. Another group went with Mr Jury for a walk on the farm while my group went kayaking. It was fun at kayaking.

Kayaking

On Wednesday I got to school thinking happily about kayaking. Finally we got sorted into groups so the adults could take us to the Bruce’s farm. Mrs Albrey took Kayden and I. Suddenly we came to a stop. Kayden and I looked up - we were there. We climbed out of the car. First Mr Jury took some other kids and I out to play some games. The first game we played was a hide and seek game. Kayden and I were the champs at that game. We played a Titanic game. A skipping rope was the Titanic. After that we went kayaking. I tipped over into the water. I thought the day was extremely fun.

Spotlight

At spotlight we went up the hill to spot people who were trying to get up. We had torches. When it was my turn to try to get up the hill I went to see Jacob. I sneaked around the hill and ducked down so he wouldn’t spot me. Then I quickly ran up and hid in the grass so he couldn’t shine his torch on me. I crept up the hill but someone called out my name and I had to go back to the start.

Camp week

During outdoor education week every year four went abseiling on the Ellis’s farm where there were really big cliffs that we were about to climb down. The giant cliffs had enormous cracks right down the middle of them and the farmer said that they are annoying when he goes picking cranberries at the top of the biggest cliff because he hates climbing at the back of it.
The smallest cliff was easy because it was only a hill with lots of straight bits on it. Callum didn’t want to go down the second one because he thought it was a little spooky but it wasn’t spooky at all. He just wanted to go home and he’s only a little dude who is scared of heights but I am his friend so I respect that. The third one was a straight out cliff plus it was the scariest thing I have ever seen in my entire life.
When we got back to school we got ready for the sleep over.

ABSEILING

During camp week I went abseiling. It was fantastic. To practise, we went down a grassy slope. After the grassy slope I had to go over to where our bags and things were. It seemed like ages before I was called up to go down the first cliff. At first it seemed huge, and then I got used it. It took me about a minute or two to get down it. At last when I had reached the bottom, I felt exhausted because it seemed to take forever. Once everything was packed up we started back to school in the car.

The Sleepover

On Thursday the year 4s and 5s stayed the night at school. We played spotlight out in the dark. It was wicked. Then we got ready for bed and Mrs. Rehmann read us a book. It was called ‘The Queue that Grew’. Then we passed Kakabro around and said our favourite thing about camp week. We went to bed where we got to talk for ten minutes before we went to sleep.

Kayaking

On Wednesday all the year fives went kayaking at Mr. and Mrs. Bruce’s farm. First 11of the children went for a walk until lunch. I was in that group. Then we went in the kayak and I was the best in my group. Last of all we played piano in the kayaks and I fell out.

Kayaking

During camp week the year 5 people drove to kayaking. First they split us into 2 groups. The first group went kayaking and the second group went with Mr. Jury. I was in group 2. We played home where there was one tiger and heaps of hiders. Later we changed groups and my group went kayaking. We played piano in our kayaks where you had to walk or run across the kayaks and I fell out one time.

Abseiling

The year fours from Waimate Centennial School went abseiling. There were three stages. A super hard one, a super easy one and a sort of easy one. There were four people who came down the big cliff Te Arahau, Ollie and Danny and I. It was lots of fun.

By Jared

Kayaking

On Wednesday I went kayaking in a river by the box. I liked playing games in the kayak. I liked the piano game when I fell out. Then Thomas and I had to swim in to the beach. I was in the second group to kayak so we went and played a game with Mr. Jury first. We hid in the bush and had to get found in there.

ABSEILING

On Thursday I went abseiling. I had to wait a wee while so I could have my turn because John wanted to see me do the easy one, I don’t know why. Then finally John turned up and it was my turn. I got half way down and SLIPPED. But I kept on going and I had to dodge cow poo which was really funny. When I had finished I had something to eat like chips, a bar and an orange. I thought about doing the second one. I went to have a look and it looked so freaky but I went to ask anyway and Mrs. Rehmann said to go and get a harness and a helmet. It took a while until it was my turn. So I went to have another snack and when I went back it was my turn. It was very slippery and I slipped half way down, then I slipped again. I was freaked out of my mind. I still wanted to do the BIG one but it was crowded. When the line was gone we had to go back to school so I missed out.

Kayaking

On Wednesday the year 5s drove down to the Waihao River. I went in my mum’s car to kayaking. I went in the kayaks first. Mum took the video camera and she videoed me kayaking. After lunch the people who were first in the kayaks went for a long walk. We played M.U.1. Next we all went for another walk before we played Titanic. I turned into an iceberg. We walked back to where we started and we watched the other people in the kayaks. They got out of the kayaks and we went back to the cars. By the time we got back to school it was time to go home.

Kayaking

On Wednesday we went kayaking - it was such fun. We went on the Waihao River near the Box. The water was cold. I was scared because Tory said that the kayak can tip over but it was fun in the end. I made Kayla do the splits and I kept hitting Kayla in the head with a paddle. Mrs Albrey laughed and so did I. Kayla said ouch and she had a headache. When the first group had finished they got changed into their clothes. While the first group had lunch the second group got changed into their kayaking clothes and went down to the polytech people. The first group played games. We played go home, stay home and I think Mr Jury made it up. Then we played another game before we walked back to the cars. We saw the second group and my friend Angel fell in the water. It was funny. Then we went back to school.

Kayaking

On Wednesday the year 5s went in cars to kayaking. I went in Kayla’s mum’s car. When we arrived at the Waihao River we got into groups of 1 and 2. I was number 1, yeah, so I got to go first at kayaking. There were some polytech people there. They talked to us about putting our lifejackets and helmets on and some other stuff. Then we put on our lifejackets and our helmets. We chose a kayak - my kayak was red. Then we got into a kayak and the polytech people pushed our kayaks into the water. First we had to practise how to paddle in the water so one of the polytech people showed me how. After that we played some games. My favourite game was piano keys. You had to stand up in the kayaks and walk across them. I fell in the water. The water was super freezing. Then it was time to hop out of our kayaks and get changed into some warm clothes.
After we got changed we went with Mr Jury for a walk. We played hide and go seek - that was fun. Then we walked back to see group 2 in their kayaks. When they had finished they got back in their clothes and then we got into cars and went back to school.
I really hope I can go kayaking again. It was so much fun.

KAYAKING

On Wednesday morning the year 5’s went kayaking at Murray Bruce’s farm. I traveled in my family’s car with Dad, Mitchell and I. When we got there I saw five alpacas or more. Then group 2 gathered around Mr. Jury (I was in group 2). We had a healthy snack and went for a walk around the farm. At the end of our walk group 2 went up to the bank (about a metre away from the water) and watched group 1 kayaking. Next everybody
had lunch. After I was finished my lunch I put on a helmet and a lifejacket, and got into a red kayak. When I was out on the water I had to get under control, (all I knew was how to go around and around), so I asked one of instructors how to go straight and he showed me how to. This is how I did it, I just about did a turn but I paddled the other way. I stayed with that instructor and learnt how to kayak. Kayaking was the best day of outdoor education week.

KAYAKING

On Wednesday we went kayaking at the Waihao River near the Box.
It was awesome because we had to play a game called piano keys.
The scariest part was when we had to walk across other people’s kayaks.
When it was my turn I nearly fell in the freezing cold water. I didn’t fall in but Laney, Kayla, Paige and Jacob did fall in.

Abseiling

On Thursday I went abseiling. It was awesome. On number one
it starts off easy and then it gets harder and harder. I had to wait for my turn on number one. After I finished number one I went to number two.
Number two is slightly harder then number one. I slipped but I stood up and went down the line. Then I went to number three - it was easy. Number three was starting to get a bit hard when Mr. Small took my photo a couple of steps away from the bottom of number three. Then I finished it and we played heads down, thumbs up.

CAMP WEEK 2011

On Monday I got to school excited about camp week. My favourite game was capture the flag - we had lots of draws. There were two positions, attacker and defender. Attackers went and got the flag from the other team. The defenders guarded the flag. I got two attackers out of jail and got the other team’s flag at the same time. On the last round I was the only attacker left. I set the other attackers all free, got the other team’s flag and we won.

Kayaking

On Thursday I went kayaking on the Waihao River by the Box. The water was cold. I know because I fell out when we were coming back to shore. After we went kayaking we set up the tents for staying the night. The best thing during camp week was water day. I got splashed by Thomas F when he was using a sponge.

Outdoor education week!!!!!

Outdoor education week was exciting because I got soaked apart from my jeans which were not wet. It was a miracle because I forgot an extra pair of jeans. It was harder then I thought to keep my jeans dry. Kayaking was realy fun even though I fell out two times.

By Shannon Shaw
During outdoor education week the year 5’s travelled to kayaking in cars. My friends Leah and Laney came in my car. We were all very excited because we were in the first group to go kayaking while the other group went for a walk around the farm with our principal. Once we all had got into wetsuits and warm clothes we were told about how to kayak and what we were going to do for the day. Finally we were told that we could hop into our kayaks and just paddle around. Next we got into groups of 3 or 4 with an Aoraki polytech student for each group. They were experienced kayakers so they told us how to turn a quick corner. Then my group had a competition to see who could turn the fastest corner - I won. Finally we were told we were going to play a game called piano keys. I knew the game they were talking about so I was even more excited. I tried to walk across the front of the kayaks for piano keys and I fell in because Paige made me do the splits. Then it was lunch time and that meant we had to get changed. But wasn’t that bad because it meant after lunch we could go for a walk with Mr. Jury. On the walk we played an awesome game of hide and seek. Sadly it was time to go back to school.

Abseiling

During camp week the year 4s went abseiling with the polytech students. I felt a bit excited. Abseiling is when you go down a cliff or a grassy slope. When it was my turn I got a bit scared because it went straight down and then it went in more. I really like camp week because you get to go to different places like Timaru. Camp week is my favourite week of the year.

The First Day Of Camp Week

I woke up thinking camp week, yeah. The reason I thought yeah is because no homework and no more schoolwork for a week. After the first two activities I was so exhausted I could barely breathe. Finally it was the third activity and that game was hosted by Andy and Tim. Heres how you play - first team to get the flag from the other team wins. I was first one to get the flag. But I was unlucky because I got tagged just outside of the cone. Looking on the bright side someone came and got the flag so our team won. The next game was such fun. We played seal tag where there were hoops. The seals tried to eat you but if you were in a hoop you were safe. When there was only one hoop left I leaned just a little bit and KERSPLAT!!!!!! Everyone fell over but me.
Then we went into the hall and played with balloons. Our last session was a tarpaulin name game. Our team won.
Whoops I forgot to tell you my name. Thanks for reading!

KAYAKING

On Wednesday all the year fives went kayaking. I got taken there by Jack’s mum. When we were kayaking I had lots of fun and lots of crashes too. The water was really cold, really deep and really creepy too. We were on the water for an hour or two.
After we hopped off the water we went for a walk with Mr. Jury. We played some games for ten minutes. Then we watched the other group kayak. While we were watching them we played with the sand and water. Then we went back to school.
I had lots of fun and a great new experience.

Outdoor Education Week

On Wednesday the 16th March 2011 the year fives went kayaking at Murray Bruce’s farm. One group kayaked first and while they did that the other group played games with Mr. Jury. We played M. I. U. and that stands for Make It Up. After the other group were finished kayaking we all had lunch. My lunch was a chocolate donut and it was yum.
After we had our yummy lunches my group got to kayak. I was so excited. We played this game called piano and I put my hand up to play. You had to walk across the other kayaks and that’s what I did. While I walked the rest of the group sang happy birthday to me because it was my birthday and I was turning 10.
That was the most awesome day ever.

Camp week

Last Monday we did all these activities on the field for camp week. My favourite game was the flag game. Our school has a hill so we used the hill for the game. The game was where there were two teams and they tried to get the other team’s flag. If you got tagged you had to go to jail. Your team could come and get you. I had to swap teams with Lily. The other team didn’t want me to swap teams.

Kayaking

On Wednesday the year 5s drove out to the Waihao River to go kayaking. When we were on the water we played a game called piano keys. After that we had to make a big raft and then got numbered .The ones went first - they had to stand up and do the actions and sing ‘Head, shoulders, knees and toes’. Most people fell out and it was funny .Then it was the twos turn to stand up. They had to the chicken dance. After we got off the water we went for a walk. We played some games and then we walked back and watched the other group of kayakers.

Kayaking

Last week during outdoor education week the year 5s of Waimate Centennial School went kayaking. There were two groups of children. The 1st group went kayaking while the 2nd group took a walk, then they swapped around.
I was in the 2nd group and I fell out of the kayak twice. It was FREEZING but I enjoyed it. At kayaking my best friend Phoenix pushed me into the water when Leighton was on my kayak. We had to swim to shore and then we got back in our kayaks. The coolest bit of kayaking was doing the piano keys.
