Civil Defence

Karen Buchannan from Civil Defence came to Waimate Centennial School to talk to us about how you can survive in a disaster like an earthquake, a flood or something worse. Then she told us that if you wanted to take a pet with you if you were evacuated, you would need to bring some food for the pet that could last for at least four days. For a person you’d need food to last for about three days or more. We really enjoyed having Karen here. By Thomas and Remo

Civil Defence

On Wednesday Karen Buchanan came to Centennial School to teach us about civil defence. Some kids from Ruma Kea were lucky enough to boil hot water with a generator or gas bottle and some really lucky kids even got to make a cup of tea for Karen and Mrs Albrey. Some got to have a cup of tea for themselves. We really enjoyed Karen coming to teach us about civil defence and we liked getting to look at all of the stuff. By Carly and Michaela

On Wednesday 23rd June Karen Buchanan went and got 2 boxes out of her car. She told us about the survival kit and showed us a box of food, a gas cooker and a generator that can be used to cook and to boil water to get all the germs out and to make coffee and tea. Riley filled up a water bag and Ethan watched. By Riley and Ethan

Civil Defence

Last week we had a lady from Civil Defence who came to our school to teach us about how to survive in floods, earthquakes and storms. Her name is Karen Buchanan. She had two buckets of food, a gas cooker, matches, a generator, fresh water and a torch/radio. She gave us some bags with a check list with all the things that you need in case of an emergency like floods, earthquakes or a storm. She had a trailer of all the stuff you need in an emergency. On Wednesday 23rd May Karen Buchannan came to teach my class about civil defence. She showed us a water bag, a first aid kit, a box of candles, a gas cooker, a box of matches, a can of dog food and a whole lot more. There was also a power generator and a jug. Some people got cups, some boiled the jug and we got to make tea but I didn’t get a cup. A few days later we had to write a letter to Karen. By Jaden

Civil Defence

On Wednesday 23rd May Karen Buchannan told us about Civil Defence. We used a generator to boil water in a jug. It was loud! With the water we boiled, Rebekah, Danny and Michaela made a cup of tea for Karen and Mrs Albrey. We did a work sheet about what we need in an emergency. Karen showed us that the radio torches run on solar power. In the boxes Karen brought, there were things like food, water and other things you will need in an emergency. At the end Karen gave us each a bag with a sheet and a book to fill in. The class now knows what Civil Defence is and what they do in an emergency. By Holly and Hannah

On Wednesday 23rd May Karen Buchannan taught us heaps about how to survive in an earthquake or a tsunami or another emergency. Civil Defence

A few days ago Karen Buchanan from civil defence came to talk to the class about what you need to do in an emergency [tornado…]. Some of the equipment we need to have is fresh water, a torch and pet food just incase you want to take your pet to somewhere safe. Some of us used a generator to make hot water for cups of tea. Remo also used a gas cooker to boil some more water, and then she gave us a worksheet/quiz to test our memory. After that Max fired up the solar powered torch/radio. She also got people to come up to solve things like if a tsunami hit, what equipment would you need to help you survive. We got to take home a civil defence bag and a sheet of paper that reminds us what we need to do and what equipment we need. We both had an awesome time!!! by Max and Danny
